The Early Years
Shawnigan Lake School
Though not a student at Shawnigan Lake School, in 1987 the school's drama teacher, Joe Grey, invited Corinda to understudy "Mabel" in Pirates of Penzance.
She rehearsed hard to be the understudy, earning the opportunity to perform the lead female role (credited as "Corinda Maitland-Davies") on the play's opening and closing nights, with the other actress performing the middle night of the play's run. For that performance, Corinda was well-featured in that year's Shawnigan Lake yearbook.
That next fall, Corinda was invited back for three roles in Shawnigan Lake's An Evening of Drama to play "a daughter" and "Courtesan" in "The Acharnians" (by Aristophanes), which was directed by JC Sarsfield. In the same night, she played the title role of "Juliet" in William Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet," directed by JS (Joe) Grey, alongside Mike Vopni who played Romeo.
Later in the school year, Corinda sang the role of "Eliza Doolittle" in "My Fair Lady" (credited as "Corinda Davies"), directed by Joe Grey. Joe told Corinda back then that he had always wanted to direct My Fair Lady. The part of Eliza Doolitle was one of the most challenging and exciting roles Corinda had played until then. Meredyth Broadway and Joe Grey helped Corinda grow as a person, including her self-confidence and self esteem.
Since that time, Shawnigan Lake School has become a "co-ed" school, and the school has a drama award named for Corinda Maitland-Davies.
Alberta Junior Citizen of the Year Awards (sponsored by TransAlta)
Corinda was nominated as finalist for Alberta Junior Citizen of the Year in 1987 for her many acting roles and singing awards. Her nominator was her grade 3 teacher, from ten years prior, Ida-May Frischke of Innisfail.
